1st and 2nd gear problems

A couple of months ago I needed to remove the gearbox on my BN4.

Since reinstalling the gearbox, I've had difficulties engaging 1st and 2nd gear and this has become worse in that I end up more often in reverse than in second (obviously while not moving)

The gearbox was totally overhauled some 7 years ago and gears were changing smoothly.

Did something go wrong when the gearbox was reinstalled? Could it be the flywheel, the clutch not properly centered, or.......

Any ideas, help are like always welcome!

Could it be the flywheel, the clutch not properly centered,

That is a possibility if the tranny for some reason did not line up properly with the engingine on reinstallation.

Why did you have to remove the gearbox?

the main nut on the starter motor had shredded off. On removing the motor, one of the washers fell into the bellhousing which made a lovely noise when hitting the flywheel . Decided it would better to recover the washer !

For my money, the only way you are going to find out is to ease the gear box back and have a look. If you only split it off the engine to remove the washer, all should line up again. If you renewed the clutch plate at the same time, it is possible that things might be misaligned. What about the bush at the end of the crank, if that was worn, it may interfere with the fit of the end of the shaft out of the gear box.

This is really a strange-sounding problem. Did you remove the shifter lever to get the tranny out of the car? If so, maybe you didn't get it seated exactly right when you re-installed it. This might make it hard to hit some of the gears.
