Megasquirt EFI Question

One thing I am not understanding about the megasquirt system - when they sell assembled, or as a kit, what is the difference? Either way, the board is complete, correct? So, is the "kit" just the board assembled into the case and whatnot?

As a kit you need to solder all the parts onto the board.

As stated, you'll need to do quite a bit of delicate soldering.
They provide you with the bare breakout board and you must attach the various components to it, being sure that solder does not "short" between isolated component leads. Depending on how old your eyes are, it could be a challenging job. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Ahhhh, I see. Yeah, I think a kit would be better for me, can't say I trust myself with soldering that delicate. I can solder, but don't want to trash a few hundres dollars in parts

The kit is the one that requires the soldering. You want the assembled version.

You can sometimes find good deals on assembled MS units on eBay. Thats where I got mine. Other than that, this site has pretty good deals:

If you buy off eBay, be sure to get the v3.0 pcb. Get the Hall sensor circuit. Don't waste money on the relay board, just pay close attention to your wiring and you will be fine. I highly reccomend buying a wiring harness form RS Autosport. I built my own harness, and it was hardly worth the heartache.

Jeff - Whoops, good call. Yes, I meant the assembled, not the kit.

Morris -Thanks for the advice on the relay board, I was considering it, but they are like $60-$90.

My only fear of an ebay unit is that it'll be some guy who can't solder worth a crap, and in a few months I'll have components coming loose on the board. I'm sure 95% of them are great, I just don't want to be in the 5% that aren't.

I agree on the harness, I was thinking it'd be worth it for simplicity.
