How to stop a leak....did I read it here?

Hi Guys,

Somewhere I read about doing a modification or something along those lines about how to stop some oil leaking. It may have been engine to transmission seal.

The article was something along the lines of, if you have your engine out or transmission out, do this or add this to help stop the leaking.

Hi Roger,
Moss and other vendors sell a rear crankshaft oil seal conversion kit. Moss # 833-415 for about $115.00. However, it is best to have the engine out of the car to install this. It involves drilling and tapping holes in the rear engine plate. usually this is best done when rebuilding the engine. Probably can be done with engine in but tranny out.
But Roger, if it doesn't leak, how will people know the car is really British?

I repaired my leak with a rear main seal kit from British Car Specialist. I had the trans out so I it was an good time to do it. There wasn't much problems and the hardest thing was getting the spring back on the rubber seal after the unit is installed. I learned a trick to that after playing with it for 30 minutes. The rear engine plate needs to come off and be modified. Those are available exchange. You'll need a rear engine gasket. I've hear that about 70% of the oil leak is from the camshaft area at the gasket. I took extra care in applying gasket sealer to the gasket.
The leak stopped until my #6 piston ring broke and then I had to pull the engine.

Hi Roger,
There are at least two kits available. There is a square housing kit and a round one. I know the square kit needs the rear engine plate cut out to fit the seal, I think the round kit does also (Denis Welsh sells an aluminum backplate). You would need to drill 4 holes through the crank-to-flywheel boltholes. Two in the block and two in the main bearing cap Then tap the holes. Here are pictures of the two types.

Big job, Roger. I'd wait until you need to take out the gear box and/or engine for what ever reason. I did mine when I needed to get the trans rebuilt. It was easy once the trans is out but that required removing the interior, etc. If you take the engine out, re-do the seals at the front end too cause its easier then. You'll get it all done and still get some leak somewhere. It's a Healey, after all. Best way to treat a leak is with an oil pan for $10.00
