One of my friends has a 1981 Toyota Celica that she would like to get a bit "refreshed" so it could be a decent weekly driver. It has the 2.2 Liter engine and a 5-speed. It needs a new exhaust and some usual TLC. Are there any good Toyota suppliers like we have with VB and Moss?

Those engines are just about bullet-proof. I'd take it to a good muffler shop, have them bend up the replacement. That'd be less expensive than the Toyota specific bits.

Nothing to add except I had an '87 for years. Used it for auto-cross as well as daily driver. As Doc says, "bulletproof".

My first car was an '80 Celica GT USGP limited edition car. They only came in red, white or blue. Mine was white w/white. I inherited it after my father (bought it new) couldn't get anything for it as a trade-in after a decade plus of daily use. It was slow, underpowered, had a huge Dolby equalizer (and tiny speakers)... If I ever saw one like it, I'd have to buy it. I think it's more than just a first-car thing, it kind of reminds me of an MG B/GT.

Exactly like this one:

First encounter with a Toyota engine was an older Corona. It was in a local Brit car shop and the proprietor asked me if I'd ever been into one. "Nope. But it's just another engine, right?" He tasked me to rebuild the engine. When I'd opened it up the bottom-end impressed me. Built like a TRUCK (actually was the Toyota truck engine). I gained a respect for the engineering with that thing. After that I got into a Honda Civic engine and found it "inferior" in that everything was lighter, thinner, kinda what I would call: "tinny" in comparison.

One friend bought a new FX-16 back-when, that little car impressed the heck outta me: twin-cam mill that was an "updated" version of my Lotus 1600's! And it was quick.

The first new car Janet and I bought was a '73 Celica. Absolutely LOVED that car! Alas, very few left... :frown:

Ours was EXACTLY like this one (except it was a four-speed):
