One step closer on the leak

My friend Bill joined me this morning, and after a nice ride in his freshly restored TR3 (my first TR3 ride) he gave a hand at identifying the issue. He rode around the block with me, then poked about the engine bay while I put some load on the engine in the garage.

I'm now quite confident that the noise is intake or exhaust, coming from that side of the motor in the engine bay. Good to have confirmation -- and an experienced set of ears to help out.

So I'll be digging in today and tomorrow to find and cure the leak. At least I've got things a bit narrowed down now.

Drew, try a peice of hose maybe three feet long, hold one end to your ear and use the other to listen in various places about the manifolds, etc. You will find it quickly.

If the muffler shop welded the downpipe to the exhaust pipe, you are about to discover why I always put a flange in the line.

If you need to get the headers out for, oh, belt sanding, you'll need a hacksaw then a welder.

Header is clamped to the pipe, so I shouldn't have to much trouble pulling it if necessary. Better clamps, though, so it cleaned up the leak there.

Hadn't thought of the hose, Jack. I'll have to give that a go.

My ex-pat English mate calls it a "listenin' pipe".
