Got my windscreen off the car and on the bench. Ran
a putty knife around the rubber top and bottom, inside and
out around the windshield glass. Want to pop the
windshield glass out of the windscreen frame. Never done
this, so looking for guys that have.

What/which way do I pull or push/pry whatever. Don't
want to break my windshield.

After that sucker is out, want to clean up the frame and paint before reinstall.

I did mine the easy way, I broke it out, but that is not what you wanted to hear. A new windshield glass is surprisingly inexpensive from TRF, at least they were 4 years ago. The fun is putting it back.....

I'm gonna whine, here. Yeah, but I wanna take it out
without breaking it. Dang.

Know there's somebody out there that's done this.

Think I read something about break the seal, then push it
out. Makes it sound easy, like: Remove the metal fascia
from the dash, then....

That's a bunch of work!

Assuming your going to replace the rubber, take a box cutter, remove the plastic chrome strip and insert the blade into the slot. Cut that piece of rubber out. The windshield should be exposed now. DO NOT pry on the glass.
Push from the back side and it should come out.I repeat DO Not pry on it.The main part of the rubber will come out after you have the glass out.

Okay. I'll cut that baby. I do have the rubber, but
thought it would be good to try to remove it with the old
rubber in tact, if that can happen. It's probably not
worth the trouble, except to compare to the replacement to
make sure they're the same.

Look to be, so I'll go ahead and cut. Thanks, TR.

Lubricate!!! I use armor all in large amounts. Gently break the "seal" from the rubber to the glass by hand, lube the stuffing out of the rubber,(dont forget to remove the locking bead first) and you might just get it out rubber and all. Remember, glass does not bend, so move the rubber. The more the rubber is lubed, the easier it is to sliiide it out. Watch out tho, slippery hands can make holding the glass tricky.

For reassembly I would take it to a glass shop and have them do it. They use the rope trick, but it's also more difficult with the frame off the car. If they break the glass, I would think they would be responsible. Make sure they center the seam in the rubber gasket with the exact center of the frame.

Yeah, thanks. Thought about paying them to take it out,
but I'm sitting home off sick and couldn't resist
cleaning a few parts and, yeah, looking at getting this
darned glass out.

I appreciate all you folks for your help. The forum is
great!

That should be the exact center of the glass not the frame.
The reason being, went you install the chrome strip, you want it to be centered with the center of the rubber seam.
Don't forget the little chrome spacer for the chrome stip
when you install it. It has to be slid over one end, then after you have the strip in place you can side it over the seam.

Re: Need help removing glass from '74 TR6 windscre

I would suggest installing your completed frame first, then installing the glass. You will be torquing that frame somewhat, hence the glass. Put the glass in last. Also, that chrome-plastic finishing strip is important as it expands the H-shaped glass seal rubber. It needs to be lubricated to install, usually soapy water will do. Sadly, over time, the darn thing tends to shrink and the gap at the bottom, where the ends once touched, will grow to the point that the little filler strip will fall off. Happened to me and others. Ended up gluing it in.

Happened to me too, that sucker shrank about a inch or more. I recently replaced the glass, rubber and chrome strip -- this time I had them leave an extra 2" of chrome strip sticking out to give me some excess for shrinkage.

I'll drive around in the Tucson sun for the summer and then trim it and fit that finisher piece.

That'll do it. Alternatively, use that same box cutter to cut off as much as possible of the inside "lip" of the gasket. That will also make it easy to push the glass out.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:] DO NOT pry on the glass. Yup. cut the old gasket and the glass will come out easily.
I agree on the going in as well. install the frame to the car, then use the rope trick with a liberal amount of dish soap (Joy is my personal favorite) for lube.
If you try to take the glass out without cutting the old gasket, you WILL break it. after cutting it's a snap.
Just be thankful your not doing an MGB.

Re: Need help removing glass from '74 TR6 windscre

Thanks to all for your comments re my windscreen
removal and ultimate install.

Got the glass out and, yes, TR6 Bill, I went to the
store and purchased a couple cans of Krylon Semi-flat
black paint. Thought "Semi-flat" could have been a typo,
but it is not. You were quite accurate.

Just want you to know that I do listen and I do take
notes. Rebuilding and repainting will involve now
gluing the little finish plastic molding that looks
somewhat like a black plastic leatherette-finished
material on the inside of the windscreen frame.
Almost did something like put an actual
vinyl fake leather material on there, but that would be probably too cheap and easy.

Naw, got to stay original and put the plastic stuff back. If it doesn't hold up and got to go for a redo all too soon,
think I'll try some vinyl leatherette type and some contact
cement. Anbody tried this?

Thanks, gentlemen. (PS: Hope it's not politically incorrect to say the word "gentlemen". Sounds kind of
sexist, doesn't it? No offense, please, ladies, if you're
out there.
