My horns Beep !!

Well, the rig ain't real pretty to look at but
both horns do indeed now beep when I push the
horn button.

I got to thinking how lazy DPO Pedro's junkyard mechanic
was. I could not believe he would go to the trouble to
remove the steering wheel hub and then remove the plastic
disk with metal contact strip out of the hub.

I dug around a little ---he didn't. It's still there and
best of all; it's functional. I found a purple/black wire
stub. Ran my new Dan Masters wire to the old wire.

I soldered a purple/black wire to the brass springy thingy
and drilled a ground wire lead into the steering shaft
large securement nut.

Ain't pretty but it honks!! Thanks all for the advice and
help. Another score for Amos!!

The wires will get all caught up when you turn the wheel. One time you will try and the wheel won't turn and you'll either kill the car or you or both.
I say not a good plan Dale!

It looks OK to me: everything rotates with the wheel. What bothers me is how the other end of the brass springy thing will remain in good contact with the ring in the column: there's nothing pressing it against it.

Julian- I don't thing everything will rotate with the wheel. The purple wire goes to the front panel so it is fixed and will have to wrap around the column as he turns.

No that is a different purple wire /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif There is a slider between the horn switch and the purple wire which is fixed.
Julian I agree with you the brass springy thing needs to be held in place.

Dale, maybe you can just epoxy the springy thing in so that it will have enough tension on the brass ring? good job.

the way I read it the slip ring was still under the wheel.I think thats were Dale got the wire from.I would as Julian indicates wonder if the "springy" thing is gonna have enough presure on it for good contact.Might want to slide something over the wire long enough to come up against horn button......shrink tubing???

Julian- right on mark.

Everything inside the hub rotates at the same time
as a monolithic unit; so actually the wires remain
constant.

Yisrael- I didn't have any epoxy handy so I used
that clear stinky glue the kids sniff. Can you believe
it? I saw the necessity for the glue myself!

I'm all the more curious for what kind of Triumph this
horn button was manufactured. (and what country of origin,
perhaps?) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

Don,

My Dan Masters wire harness p/b is now connected to the
stub of DPO Pedro's p/b that feeds into the plastic disk
that the brass springy thingy rides on. Whew!!

I soldered a short piece of new p/b to the other brass end
of the springy thingy and then connected it to one spade
on the horn button.

The 2nd spade on the horn button goes to ground.

My oddball horn push touches both spades in the inside
and completes the beep beep circuit.

Screwy? Yes but it works. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/yesnod.gif

Dale that piece does not rotate ,so you have a wire soldered to a fixed point and when you turn the wheel lock to lock you wind the wire around the column.
can't be good.

There is nothing that the horn wires are attached to that stays stationary. This whole unit turns as one, therefore,no problems.

Not trying to be nasty, but there really is no concern here.

The other end of the springy thing rubs against the brass ring that Dale found out that DPO never removed. It acts like a brush in an alternator. The rotor in an alternator has no problem rotating with the fan belt.

I bet it wasn't designed for any Triumph per se. Those horn buttons were used on allot of different English cars of the period and that was probably a version sold for anyone who wanted to install a non-stock wheel but still have the factory finish look. Take a look at any catalog for after market steering wheels they usually have a bunch of different finishing pieces with the appropriate corporate symbols. Yours just happens to be a Lucas bit made in England, almost like the original just with two spades on it to make it easier to hook up non standard steering wheels.

Well done, Dale! Good bodge! Even a small piece of sponge would put enough tension on the brass brush. Just remember ya don't want TOO MUCH on it.

Actually, once the horn button is in place, the slight
extra length of the p/b wire from the spade to the brass
end provides a small bit of downward pressure. I'll
just have to see how it pans out with use.

It's not really a Pedro-ized fix, although it could be argued it appears so. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonono.gif

Pedro's junkyard mechanic did not have any wires on either
horn, nothing was inside the steering wheel head and the
horn button was held in place with chewing gum. DPO Pedro
told me all it needed was a new fuse! Thus began the total
car rewire that began February 2006 and is finally
completed except for glove box light and tranny tunnel
light. (My option NOT to install either.)
