question about air horns/trumpets

OK....since I burned up the K&N filter set-up on my Bugeye from the fire a few days ago, I've been looking at alternatives. I have been thinking about getting some 3" trumpets, but I'm not sure if I can get a filter over them.

I found some with a gauze filled screen over the opening and was wondering if it would be a good idea to use on a daily driver (i.e. not a race car). What concerns me is that Colorado is a dusty state and I don't want to ingest any more dirt than I have to. I think they would look awesome though, so if they won't do any harm then I'll go that route. The easiest solution would be to just buy a replacement K&N filter, but I've been known to do the complete opposite of easy!

Any thoughts? Here's a picture of what I'm looking at:

I have a pair of those, just removed. Got a pair of MGB cooper can bases I will be putting K&N cones on.
I have seen foam socks that can be placed over the horns, but don't know where to get them.

So you ran them as-is with no filter around them? Foam socks are a good idea.....I didn't think about that.

yes, but not for a long time and mostly freeway driving

Not recommended, too much dirt in the air!

You most likely won't be able to find a filter to put them into. The air socks are OK for the race track, but don't do an adequate job for driving on the street. the deepest K&N's are a tad over 3" deep. It is said that for the horns to work properly you need at least as much free space around the throat as the stacks are tall, so you need another 3", and anything that big won't fit under the hood. ..

YMMV

I agree Mike, definetely run air filters. Don't want you to wear out my engine! Ha!
Seriously though I've seen engine's ruined in a year of driving them in only moderatly dusty condition's

South Carolina State . Gamecocks are their mascot. Better than any Clemson Tiger Mascot.

Clemson is down right unAmerican outsourceing for their mascot. We at USC use american mascots
