TR6 Gas cap fitting on TR6 [71]

In the process of changing out my gas tank to cap hose I came across a brass hose fitting that was screwed into the side of the gas cap just below the rear deck. After a long frustrating attempt at trying to refit this fitting in the confined inaccessable space I gave up for now.
My question is....
I do not see this fitting in the Moss exploded drawings or in my manual so is it necessary or will a different, maybe newer cap negate the need for this?

Perchance, has someone fitted an electric fuel pumph to your car and tried to rig their own tank vent? Was there a 1/4" plastic hose in the area of the fitting? My new gas cap fits so loosely that the tank doesn't need a vent, per se.

when I purchased my 71 6, a year ago I could smell a strong gas oder, in trying to pull the gas fill neck out I found the screwed in fitting your refering to, once unscrewed I replaced the rubber filler tube put the neck back in and then screwed the brass stub in, in order to do this I used a 6 inch piece of rubber tubing, stuck the fitting in the tubing and kind of used the tubing as an extension, worked like a champ, then added about 3 feet of rubber hose on the fitting and routed it through a hole in the trunk floor and now more gas smell. Hope this helps

Thanks Hondo I'll give it a try with using the hose to attach it.

Bill I do not see an electric pump and this is a vent as Hondo described I was also trying to eliminate a gas smell.

Is any of the rest of the vapor emission control system (plastic tubing? charcoal cannister?) still in place, or did someone remove it?

It is all still there. The gas smell was because the hose had pulled of the gas cap fitting. What would be the result of blocking off the fitting and not reconnecting the hose?

Paulus,
Don't do that!
You will not be able to drive the car very long as you will create a vacuum in the fuel tank and will not be able to draw fuel. The symptoms mimic vapor lock exactly!
It took me a couple of weeks to track down and correct this DPO repair in my car!
Its best to leave the evaporative loss control system connected as designed.
The early cars used the fitting in the filler neck as you described.
