Fitting a Moto Lita Steering Wheel

Hi all

Ive just purchased a Derrington style Moto Lita wheel (very nice quality BTW) I have an adjustable column and wonder if someone can set out for me the procedure for removing the existing wheel.

Hi Derek,Removing original wheel. 1] Around the base of the wheel's hub are three grub screws-Remove them and put in a safe place. 2} Lift the Bonnet and feel under the bonnet lock for a group of harness connectors and trace them back to the steeing box.Disconnect the connections leaving only bullets on the wire ends. 3} go to the cockpit and remove the horn cancellation assy from the steering wheel, be very careful and if the bullets hang up go under neath the car and feed them into the tube. 4} loosen the steering wheel adjuster. 5} get a Proper sized socket wrench and remove the nut in the center of the steering wheel and the small circlip fitted at the top of the shaft. Hi Derek, Some people have tied a string to the wires at the steering box up front before pulling everything out. Leave the string in the stator tube and use it to pull the wires back down when reinstalling.

After your new wheel is installed and when pulling the wires back down the stator tube, I found it easier to remove the bullet connectors and then resolder them once the wires were pulled through.

Earlier, when I had some question regarding Moto Lita steering wheels/boss Skipp&Lynne wrote this:

Since my car was undergoing complete restoration I installed the boss and it is secured with the nut on the steering column then installed the trafficator wiring and head, I ran some .032 safety wire through the column to pull the wires back with. By the way some shrink sleeving works wonders on holding the wires togther. Then I installed the wheel and horn button

Your question reminded me that about 20 years ago when I bot my BJ8 one of the first things I did was buy a MOto Lita wheel. The instructions said the first thing to do would be to take the olive nut off the stator tube. being new to British car instructions this drove me nuts for several days trying to figure out what the H they were talking about. But I finally got it done and has worked fine ever since.
