TR5/TR250 excessive oil usage on tr250

since my last engine rebuild, my tr has been using too much oil (about 1 quart every 200 miles). I believe it is either because the valve guides do not have any seals (which is of stock configuration) bronze guides where installed during the rebuild and I was told adding seals would deprive the guides of much needed lubrication. the other cause could possibly be coming from the added on after market, oil feed line. I have read that this causes excessive oil usage.

That is a bit exessive. Whoever told you not to put seals on the valve guides, in my opinion, is wrong. Yes, the guides do need oil, but not that much. Does blue smoke come out the tailpipe when you start it up? Thats a sign of losing oil thru the guides. That still seems like alot of oil for valve guides leaking. I think you have other problems. Could'nt you temporarily block off that oil feed line,...then see if that cures the oil consumption problem?

At least that seems lie an easy way to find out if that oil feed line is causing any problems.

Did you change the rings when you rebuilt the engine? And are you absolutely sure they were put on right?

Disconnecting the oil feed line is a good idea as that is a likely culprit. Other than that I would look into where is th e oil going & when. Color and timing of tailpipe smoke is a clue, some leaks are obvious but others occur only at certain RPMs, blow-by can cause oil to be sucked thru the carbs or pushed out elsewhere.

A quart in 200 miles should be pretty noticeable.

I agree with George, Stinky, & Mailbox on the extra oil line & the valve stem seals. Flooding the top end, especially without seals can let a lot of oil in.

Flooding the top can also let a lot of oil out the breather.
