Usually a Triumph poster here....but....

I was planning on going to BJ but my schedule went to heck.

Watching on TV I see a pretty nice XK120 went for $60k.

Had I been there, I would have put up a bit more of a fight than those in attendance.

Seemed very well bought in my opinion...any thoughts here on that transaction?

I thought it was a good buy as well. I could sell mine for half that. Buy that one and still be ahead of what I'll put into this one I have now before I finish it. Plus the time!

The last car on the list 1605 was a 2000 XK8 Hollywood, what ever the significant application of that is.

Anyway,, a surprise of $33,000, included the buyers fee, but here in NC, I could get a couple of the best ones around for that.

Love mine even more.

I may have caught the XK 120 / 140 / 150 disease. Ever since that auction I have been flipping through magazines trying garner more details on the cars.

Can anyone recommend a good reference book for these models? I am looking for something that explains the history, production numbers / details and a buyers guide of sorts.

Any help would be most appreciated.....

First car I ever worked on was my father's 1952 XK-120 coupe. I was in high school and he was doing a concours restoration. He sill has the car, and it's still breathtaking. Tremendous to drive, too!

Good luck!

Theres a 120 OTS, white with red interior on Nashville Craigslist for $48K which I think is a decent buy. Want to go look at it but I know better! I've bought too many Triumphs lately so no more for a while.

Why would my first edition sell for about $30 and newer copies go for hundreds?

I have done restorations on XK 120 Roadsters, Fixed Heads and even a XK 120 Alloy Body that was sold at auction this summer. The best advice that I can give is, stay away from cars that have a substantial amount of rust. All of the XK's are rust magnets and to repair it properly is extremely expensive. every panel and substructure relies on the joining panel for proper fit. Envision a Porsche 911. The doors, hood, and deck fit into predetermined openings and only need a little fussing to achieve that well known Porsche gap. On the XK's one front fender is 1/4 of the body and proper placement determines the location of the door and engine compartment opening at the same time. I am currently restoring a XK 120 Fixed Head that had severe rust issues through out and rotted door and boot lid wood framework. I started with the rocker panels and have worked my way out. I am about 95% done with the sheet metal fabrication, panel shaping, and lead work at $75,000. Buy the best rust free structure you can find. You have to look past the bolt on stuff and the paint. Also if the car claims to have had all of the rust repairs completed, that is a definite red flag because the work is rarely done properly. Find the car you want, ask a million questions, and if it sounds good then have someone you trust spend a few hours going over the car from top to bottom. Good luck! JD
