MGB 1973 MGB stuck tachometer

The tachometer on my 1973 MGB is stuck at 3000 rpm. Is this a difficult fix for a novice? Expensive to have it serviced by a pro?

Stuck at 3K ~all~ the time? Ignition on or off? If so, either replace it with another or send it to a gauge repair shop. If it is at "0" with iggy off and jumps to 3K with switch on, there's most likely something amiss in the circuit to it.

If you have "watchmaker" hands it's do-able, there are links to a number of good "how to" articles somewhere here in the forum. DKLawson's come to mind.

Sending it to a repair house can be somewhat expensive but the best bet in the long run. We use Nisonger but there are others.

Our go-to guy here is The Autoist, Tony. PM him to see if he may have a replacement to offer.

Thanks a lot. Yeah, it's stuck all the time with engine on or off. I'm just in the midst of purchasing the car. The current owner just replaced the battery and hadn't noticed the problem beforehand. Could the battery replacement be related?

A qualified: "could be"... but highly unlikely given the '73 is a negative ground car. It's more likely the unit is stuck. If I were in the circumstance it'd be a used replacement from 'The Autoist' and the replaced unit disassembled or sent to be refurb'd. And about $200 off the purchase price for the task.
