hello, would love to find out what gear oil everyone prefers for a 1973 TR6 and the location of where to add the oil. Thank you!!

This is what I used.... not cheap, but I found it to be an excellent oil for the transmission.

It's been a long time since I added the oil but I think I added it while the cover was off the transmission. Hopefully someone else will post where the best place is to add the oil.

X2 on the Redline MT90.

I think the plug is in the same place on a TR6 as on a TR4, here:

I cut an access hole in the tunnel but you can also get to it from beneath, then either pump up into it or run a tube up into the engine bay and set it up like an IV.

I prefer Sta-Lube 85W90 weight GL4 gear oil. I get mine at NAPA. I use it in both the transmission/overdrive, as well as in the differential.

I used a cheap ($8.00) transfer pump from Harbor Freight. It worked fine... put the car level on jack stands so you can slide under it, making sure your bottle of gear oil can stand upright. Buy or find a set of SAE spline sprockets for that square plug. As I recall you'll need the 7/16 size. HF has a 3/8 drive set for $10. Note that the hose fits tight enough in the trans filler hole to block the fluid from coming back out so you can't tell you have enough in there until you remove the hose, so keep your drain pan under it.

Here's a suggestion that never seems to come up in British-car discussions: Swepco 201. It's a very high-end lubricant; the classic Porsche community views it almost as a magic elixer. It's available in 80W-90, and tolerates yellow metals. It can be used in both the gearbox and differential. It's not cheap, however, and can be a little hard to find.

I wouldn’t get too complicated with oil an ep 80/90 is good but stinks.
I have converted to Gear oil 30 on advice of Pete cox the cox of cox and buckles the original MOSS company.
he became a gear rebuilder.

just change your oil frequently it’s not that expensive.

but before you drain the gearbox make sure you undo the side filler first !!
