TR2/3/3A Clutch Throw out bearing to Carrier installation "tool"?

Can't remember what forum where I saw this tool on. Basically it's a large washer with a nut and bolt that you tighten and it applies even pressure to push the bearing on to the carrier. Anyone know who sells this tool?

The Roaster Factory, at least they used to. I'm not finding it right now in any of their online catalogs.

TRF's claim was that the tool rotates the bearing as it presses it on, and that is a better way to install the bearing. A vise or press won't do that. Now that may have just been hype.

I put the carrier in the freezer for an hour, the TOB on top of a light bulb for less than that, and with minimal force of a vice went right on.

I'm going to try your method. I guess the danger of using a vice without the freezing and cooling method is that the pressure from the vice could damage the bearing race.

The races will take a lot of pressure...just don't be tempted to use a hammer on the bearing itself. That is what will brinnel the races.

I have a really nice vice (found on Craigslist for $50, ended up being a $700 machinist vice that was from an air force base) with big and soft jaws. Depending on your vice, I would also use caution or use two 2x4's on each side to help assure even pressure across the bearing. Mine literally went on with one crank of the arm of the vice.

I think the whole thing with the bolt & washers came about back when they were having unexplained early failures of the throwout bearing. I believe it was later decided that the real problem was the bearings and/or sleeves not being made properly; but it doesn't hurt to take extra care with them.
