TR6 Wiring question

1971 TR6 - can't figure out how to wire the distributor to the coil. the distributor has a red and a black wire coming out of it. My guess is the red wire goes to the positive terminal on the coil and the black goes to the negative. Correct? The wiring diagram in my shop manual only shows one wire coming out of the distributor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bob

I am guessing a Pertronix electronic ignition has been added inside the dist. According to their instructions, the red wire goes to the + terminal on the coil, the black to the - terminal.

Maybe mine is a Pertronix. Its got the red and black wires but it also has 2 vacuum nipples, one coming off each side of the distributor. According to the shop manual, the vacuums lines go to each carb. So, I think the body of the distributor is OEM but the guts may have been changed at some point. I'll take a closer look when I get home tonight. Appreciate the help.

Yes...the Pertronix just replaces the points and the condenser within a distributor. It doesn't have anything to do with the vacuum retard or vacuum advance modules.

BTW, if you need to leave the ignition switch on without the engine running, say for some electrical troubleshooting, unplug the Pertronix from the coil..
There is a chance the Pertronix will burn out under those circumstances.

Thanks for the advice Poolboy, I think you probably hit the nail on the head! I'll post again tonight when I get home and look at it again.

I don't have a Pertronix but if I did I would also be carrying in the boot either the necessary bits to swap back to points or else a spare Pertronix.

Just my thinking as I often drive in places w/o cell phone service or nearby towns (not that either will be much help if the ignition dies).

OK, I looked and it appears to be a Pertonix. Red wire to positive on the coil, black to negative. Thanks for all your help.

remember to straddle the ballast resistor when you hook it up

That should not be a concern with a 71...they didn't ballast until 73.

Fair call. Not that my wiring seems to bear much resemblance to the original diagram now :rolleye:
