Girling vs other wheel cylinders

I had my original girling wheel cylinders brass sleeved. Unfortunately, the brass sleeve didn't help the bleeder screw seat. I couldn't get a good seal and ended up over tightening. That was a couple of days ago so I'm almost over the unpleasant feeling of defeat.

My favorite supplier is out of stock on the girling wheel cylinders. They, and other vendors, list reproductions but don't say where they are manufactured. Not a great quality message.

I see some made by TRW or made in Italy by AP, and many others.

Are girling the best? Are there others that are equal or better?

Dale, the aluminum Girling wheel cylinders should have a blunt tipped bleeder screw with a small ball bearing to do the sealing. Without the ball, you will never get a proper seal. If you have substituted a pointed bleeder screw, these can damage the taper in the cylinder, again leading to a poor seal.

Edit: After getting home and checking my spares, I realized only the front cylinders on front drum brake cars use the screw-and-ball bleeder type. The rears use the pointed bleeder screw.

You could repair your sleeved cylinders with this:

Thanks guys. The one cylinder has a small crack now so I'll need to replace that one. The other side is not cracked nor are the threads striped. The bleeder just doesn't seat very well.

I do hate to replace these brass sleeved originals but it's probably the best option. The question is with which manufacturer?

I think that I had one from India under the name - County, I have had no problems with it other than I had to open up the slot in it to enable it to slide on the back plate after fitting the twin locking collars. I felt that the set up was too tight so had to dismantle it again to do the filing.

Fitted one from a well known supplier over the Chrismas holiday I ordered Girling but nla so received one in a plain package with no name. It works fine but had the same issue as you Bob too tight a fit, it was a devils own job to fit initially until I realised the gap for the spring retainers was smaller than original.

you should contact the supplier and let them know. About three years ago a supplier had possible master cylinder problems and replaced them plus an installation credit. They can't fix what they don't know about.

I think the County cylinders may have been fixed. A friend converted his BN6 to front wheel discs a couple of years ago and installed the Moss rear BN7 cylinders with no fitment problems such as those described above.

After 25+ years in the field of reverse engineering and quality inspection, I cannot think of many dimensions easier to measure, properly dimension and then subsequently control than a slot as discussed here. I sure hope someone else at that company was in charge of the other critical function dimensions dealing with the hydraulics.
