fuel filter location

Hello,

I just recently purchased a 1974 MGB GT and I am in the process of replacing the fuel system. The problem is, where is the fuel filter located? Is it possible that the previous owner removed it? Looks like the fuel lines have been replaced at some point.
Thanks.

It should be on the firewall just to the driver side of the heater

However, I've seen some back where the fuel pump is located....behind the passenger rear wheel...if its there, move it to up in the engine compartment

Tony, When did they first put the filter on the left inter fender in front of the forward carb? My 72 has it there. PJ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I just re-read... And my Dyslexia is going rampant. You said when did they put it in front of the driver's side cab... That's where it should be....... In my next statement, I was assuming (misread) Behind the passenger seat, under the car...

"they" didn't a PO did. It's a good thing to have a non-glass one there - as well as the one beside the heater box...

The one down low protects the fuel pump... The one up high protects the carb.

That's also a good position for a fuel filter if the carbs pick up gas from the front....remember, some carbs pick up from the rear, some from the front...wherever the metal line ends is a good place for a filter.

I updated my respose... I misread the post ahead of it... The new response fits better! (and is the oposite of what I said before).

I re-read, and listen to Tony... I must be going nutz! I'll blame it on that danged Toyota of mine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

An unfortunate junxtapositioning of circumstances, obviously.

SWMBO calls it "Pumping Irony."

Back to the subject at hand...

My 74 carbs feed from the front and the gas filter is on the fender too. I did also have an inline filter on the fuel pump outlet, but pulled it and tossed it, as it just was another kink in the line causing problems.

If they feed from the front, out on the fender is correct - if they feed from the rear, on the firewall is correct

sorry I didn't clarify myself earlier

& I never put one back by the fuel pump...yaa gotta ask yourself: why redundancy?

Haven't had a chance to check in lately. I believe then that my fuel filter is indeed mounted on the drivers side fender. I was confused because I puchased an inline filter and the one on the car at the moment looks like a kind of junction with 1 input(from tank) and 3 more finding their way to the carbs. Does this sound right?

Thanks,
Gary.

Maybe on the fuel pump inlet. Lot of tanks have some rust & junk in them. Fuel pump valves don't seal so well if there is "anything" in them. If they don't seal, they don't pump so well. SU pumps have a coarse inlet "screen" that really doesn't keep out the smaller stuff. Some pumps don't have any screen. A filter between tank & pump is not such bad insurance really. Lot of mechanical pumps have an inlet side filter. Too cautious - maybe.

The bottom of your fuel pickup doesn't have a screen?

SU pump "flutter-valves:" I've seen 'em spotless and I've seen 'em *caked* with red "mud." I have no problem with a filter between tank and pump, as an added measure of protection. Especially now that the cars are in their thirty-to-forty year age bracket.

Doc, also no problem with putting a second one back there - they just weren't there originally...& if proper maintenance is done, they're not needed now (of course, the tank would need to be dropped, boiled, & replaced along with the fuel lines blown out to get back to like new - & that may not be a bad thing to do once every 30 years or so!).
