TR2/3/3A TR3 Fuel Filter

On my TR3, it seems like it would be a good idea to have a disposable fuel filter between the pump and carbs. Is this normally done by any forum members?

There is a 1/4" flexible line that starts just above the water pump going to the carbs, it looks like a good spot to locate a filter.

Any comments pro or con?

I always install a clear fuel filter in all my older cars. On my one TR3, I have a clear filter just before the carbs., this way I can always see if the carbs are getting fuel. This location is far enough away from the headers that I've never had a problem with vapor lock. The only negative about this location is that it is almost directly above the generator/Alt., so you have to make sure the connections don't leak.

The original TR3's came with a glass filter (actually more like a sediment bowl) attached to the fuel pump. I've never seen one break. It's some pretty thick glass. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer.gif

I think they are refering to the plastic "see through" type of filter.

martx-5, Right you are, I was refering to large plastic disposible clear filters. I have them on several of my cars and have never had any problems. I have used the glass ones in the past and they do appear to be thick glass, but they screwed together and used a replaceable filter inside. They had a tendency to leak if the rubber seals didn't seal correctly, so I no longer use that design.

I have one of the large clear plastic ones on my MGB. It does flow fuel just fine but to me it usually looks empty, I cannot see very much fuel in it. The fuel must be flowing through there because the car runs fine

I don't bother with an additional filter, never had a problem from just relying on that bronze screen in the top of the sediment bowl.

Yes, the clear filters will often look nearly empty even though fuel is flowing... they only fill just enough to reach the outlet I think.

Another spot to locate one on the TR3 would be in the flexible line between the hard line and the fuel pump inlet. In that case the connection would be 5/16" of course.
