Fuel Filter Level

Has anyone observed the gas level in their gas filter by the pump. When the car is idling what level is the gas at. I have the clear type and when the car is idling the level is about 1/3 of the filter. If I bring the idle up the level rises. Do I have an old tired fuel pump or does this sound normal. BTW I never run out of gas when I am getting on it while out on the road. Thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Jerry, when I used to have a transparent fuel filter, I pretty much observed the same thing. I think that is normal. My clear fuel filter sprung a leak and scared the bejeezes out of me so now I use a metal one.

Oh, by the way, I installed my new Italian fuel pump and would have to comment that it seems to work just fine.

It is my experience that if it is the clear, clynderical style filter, you have purchased the PART FROM HADES!!! Heaven help you!!Take it off and smash it with a brick!!Trust me on this one,or I will tell you a story of pain and torment.....

Purolator makes a beautiful little inline steel filter with a glass center that comes apart to be cleaned and replace the filter insert. Been using it for years without any issues.

Glass has no place in a fuel system. Plastic, even less. Quite a few lucky people around, a few not so. Anything that melts or can break is a potential disaster. I think I know the same way that MD does.

There used to be plenty of glass bowl fuel pumps out there as well. Cost issue killed them more than safety. It was pretty strong glass though.

Could be just air in the filter that cannot escape. Under low pressure it expands and under higher pressure it compresses.

Hi Bill,
Note that I said glass, plastic, or anything that melts. Fuel grade "rubber hose", the real stuff, is remarkably resistant to fire. It takes a very long time to burn through in a direct torch flame. As soon as the flame is removed the hose self extinguishes & most certainly does not melt. It will not fracture from temperature changes or impacts. Not at all in the same class as glass or most plastics. But you know this, I guess?

Use what ever you like, just giving my opinion.
