Back at it -- Tunebug is in pieces

Swapped the MG for the Tunebug on Sunday, and dove back in to work on my exhaust leak and tuning issues. I've got a new cap/wires/coil to go on from Jeff at Advanced Distributor, and a competition exhaust gasket that hopefully will seal the header a bit better than the old stock one.

Hope to have it all buttoned up in a week or so -- busy gig week this week but there's only so much summer left and I need to soak up as much of it as I can before the long cold winter.

Radiator stays in this time, so should go faster. Besides, the engine's already been rebuilt.

Hope to have the ignition bits and new header gasket installed tonight.

Some small progress tonight. Got the new cap, wires, and coil installed and wired up. Still have to go back and recheck the point gap. Also reset the micro adjuster according to some instructions I got from Jeff at Advanced (he sets them so he can see the 4 little marks on the shaft). This is now a top-entry cap with plug-in resistor wires, so it shouldn't mess with my timing light.

Lots of gigs the rest of this week, so it'll probably be Sunday before I can tackle the exhaust gasket.

The spark travel faster down a solid wire than it does through a resistor wire. That's the only thing should be "messing" with your light. Either way, you set it for what it is. You use an inductive light on long reistor wires, you'd best be reading at the plug.

On your header gasket, look closely at the old one. It will show you where it was leaking (black streak), then look at the header in that spot for humps or weld slag or whatever and fix it before you re-assemble.
Then, with headers, the old adage is tighten it, start it, warm it up to operating temperature WITHOUT driving it, shut it off, and re-tighten. Then, tighten once a day for a week, once a week for a month, and once a month for a year.

Now calm down, boys -- cap, wires, and coil are what Jeff at Advanced recommends, and I trust his advice here.

I will take a good long look at the old gasket and header and will try and see what's going on. Getting the header out of the car is next to impossible, so I'm hoping what ever I find is fixable in-situ. We'll see this weekend.

As long as it's a Brazilian Blue... it will be improving the reliability of the Sprite. Long live the Bosch Blue. Good choice.
