TR2/3/3A TR3 disassembly oops!

I was not able for years (decades) to get the points cam out of the distributor. Got lucky today changing from points to petronics and it came right out. The weighs were sticking years ago so I dismantled, cleaned it and upon re assembly realized I did not keep track of the order I dissembled it. Tried putting #1 piston at top TDC and looking at the rotor position and it seamed 180 out and backfired when I tried to start it. flipped the cam 180 and it was worse. I misplace my Haines manual and tried to look on line for instructions with no luck. Tried the Bently site but it's always blurry so you can't read it.

The rotor for number 1 should be pointing at the front of the engine. The rotor goes in a counter clockwise motion. If you are setting up the new system, you will need to set the pick up in the top right corner of the distributor.

....or if you're lazy, bring #1 to TDC power stroke and put #1 wire to whatever recepticle on the cap the rotor is pointing to. Proceed w/ the rest of the firing order; set your timing and you're done.

I found my manual and so far nether the haines or bently manual gives a screw by screw assembly. I'm trying it one more time this weekend and if no success it' going to my Triumph mechanic. I was hoping for a house call but he wants me to bring it in and he also wants to eliminate the vacuum advance and change the curve. I don't fully understand that distributor stuff.

I'd hang on to the vacuum advance if you can; it will lower fuel consumption and help reduce the tendency to overheat.

Does this look correct? particularly the way the springs and the weights are connected.

I'd have to find one to look at to be certain, but I believe the posts from the weights go into the center holes in the little phenolic pieces.

That last pic did it! as soon as i got the weights in the right holes you can see everything lining right up. I put the points in first to make sure it was going to run. then the Petronics went in. Just needs timing set now.

Feeling pretty good about the car so I tried driving it for work today. Got about 60 miles on it and it started to act up. Slight miss at acceleration or a small load on the engine. Pulled the chock out slightly and that improved it. Pushed it back in going 60mph down the high way and it was fine till I got home. So I got to look in the fuel delivery system somewhere.
