TR2/3/3A TR3 distributor tach drive disassembly

got an oil leak from the tach drive on the pedestal....

Got the drive gear assembly out, but there seems to be a TINY pin holding the assembly together (green arrow in the photo) What makes me nervous is the pin isn't a "through-pin" - if I punch it inwards, not sure it will come back out for re-assembly..?

The "head" (threaded bit to the right of the green arrow) is pretty wobbly. Guessing the reason will be obvious on disassembly, but I'm open to the experience of the group - any heads-up's?

If Randall can't answer this one, I'd contact Jeff at Advanced Distributors.

Been a loong time since I've had one of those apart; but ISTR you have to drill the pin out and then install a new pin (or rely on Loctite).

I also vaguely recall that there is no reason to disassemble at that point, unless you are going to replace the bearing. The seal can be replaced by pulling out the shaft and working through the bore.

But it has been a long time, so it's probably worth asking Jeff.

TRF shows the bearing as NLS (which is probably another reason not to try to remove the threaded adapter), but the seal is available (P/N 60247). Moss doesn't even have a part number for the bearing.

Aloha,

I recently disassembled two of those to make one good one. Neither had a pin in them. The bushing and the threaded end for mounting the tach drive cable were a single piece. The bolt the goes through the distributor pedestal holds the bushing in place and gear shaft just floats in place on the ones I've seen. Perhaps the pin is part of a "repair". I'll double check tonight to see if I can find a pin.

Okay, my recollection was wrong, it isn't one machined piece. I checked the two spares I have, one has a pin and the other doesn't. It appears that there are two bushing fitted inside an outer thin wall bushing. The threaded end for the drive is shorter, it only goes down to about the mounting bolt and has a smaller bore and there is a seal below it. The other is longer, up to the mounting bolt and has a larger bore. There is a collar on the gear shaft to keep it in place.

I checked two of my spares, both have the pin, though it's kind of hard to see.

got it apart. Thanks for all the help!

I think I'll locktite it back together, rather than re-doing the pin bit. Not sure if you can see i the photo that the sloppiness of the head caused the pin to wear a hole in the outer shell.

FWIW, there is no reason you have to reuse the original pin or it's hole. I've repaired somewhat similar things by drilling new holes and putting small self-tapping screws into them (to facilitate future disassembly).
