TR2/3/3A small block into TR3

I just completed the frame restoration of my TR3 and added rack/pinion steering, new brakes, etc.The body is off the frame at this time, so my plan was to rebuild and install the original engine, but I've started to give thought to installing a small block V8. Has it been done before and how involved is it. Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.

Had a fella show up at our annual show this year in New Orleans with his TR3 and a Ford V8 shoehorned into place. Very professional install, beautiful car. Serious cooling problems though. I think he wisely widened the track a bit, that's a lot of torque for such a narrow car.

Dan Masters from Advance Auto Wire has a V8 in his TR6. Click here to see his and others. There are links to two TR3's. One with a Ford V8, and the other with a Rover V8.

Thanks for the enlightenment. I was hoping that there was some simple swap that could be done, but after looking at the links posted, they look great, but way more work and money then I want to spend. I'll just rebuild my original engine and drop it in. It seemed like a good idea at the time. thanks again for the replies.

I think I would try to gently discourage you from doing that.
While I am not a die-hard purist I do feel the age of the TR3 and its relative rarity deserve respect, and it was a fast car in its day with the original motor. Some period-appropriate engine mods would be nice if you want more performance.
I also feel a lot of work would need to be done to strengthen the chassis and upgrade other components to make the car safe. I like TR6s with V8 conversions, not keen on TR3s.

Just my opinion, of course, it"s your car!
Simon.

I agree with Simon. Mod your engine and enjoy it. Drop in a V-8 and regret it forever.

As much as I like playing with my TR6, I would probably never try a V-8 in it. Too many mods to the drive train to do it right and to do it safely.

I'd rather have a fast 6 cyl with great disc brakes all around.

I am in the process of installing a Chevy 350 crate in my TR-3. It is shorter than a Ford 289/302/351. I still had to move the firewall back at little in the center. I have had it all together to be sure it fits. It is now apart again. Frame is powder coated and body in primer after being media blasted (main body) and dipped all the parts and pieces. I had Beta rear fender made in England to accomodate more trad on the rear.

Scott,
Added to the comments above; A short wheelbase and a narrow track are a dangerous combination for a high horsepower car. Are you are looking for a straight line racer or trying to increase the performance and retain the handling?

A couple of links;

Check out the pictures of an MGA popping a wheelie. Fun, but it probably doesn't handle.

WADR Arrow,
According to the 2nd link. The small block Chevy is 1" shorter, but 2" wider than the Ford. That is precious space in a narrow car like a TR3. There is a bigger penalty in weight. The Chevy is 115 pounds heavier. Add aluminum heads to the Ford and you drop another 36 pounds.
