Reuse clutch disc?

The clutch disc on my 64 BJ8 project looks new and measures approx. .353" thick (9.5" od). I have no idea the history of the car so I don't know how old it is. Both the flywheel and pressure plate are smooth with no gouges but the pressure plate needs rebuilding because the area where the release bearing rides is worn some. Is it worth trying to reuse this clutch disc? Thanks and have a good day!

Replace and keep as a spare. Replace/rebuild pressure plate, throwout, pilot, flexible slave cylinder line and spicers/U-joints. Add rear mainseal. Do the right thing while it is all apart now, it is cheaper in the long run in both time and money, not to mention the could-have should-have factor.

Just one guy's opinion.

Does it have an inner circle of springs(anti-chatter springs)? If any of them can be turned by hand the disc is history.

Hi John,
A new disc measures about .350" thick with the wave spring, between the two facings, compressed. A well worn disc measures about .300" when compressed. If you didn't do so, clamp the edge of the disc in a vise before measuring.

If your .350" measurement is with the spring (wave washer) compressed, I would say it's fairly new. If it is less than .340" I would replace it. Alternately, if the lining is less than .080" above the rivet HEADS, I would replace the disc.

It would be a shame to go to all that work & have a worn disc fail in a short time. They really are not that expensive. As others have said, it's a good idea to replace the throw out bearing & related parts also.

Thanks for the response. I cannot move any of the six springs (red paint marking on springs). There is only .071" of lining above the rivits and .325" thick when lining compressed so it looks like it will need to be refirbished/replaced. That is why this forum is so good! Thanks to all and have a good day!

John
