I have had the car 10 years so decided to change the bearings as preventive maintenance. Is it difficult to change these, or can I do it myself? I have the original shop manual and the chassis is all cleaned up but the body still off, so now is a good time to do it.

Simon--The front bearings are a walk in the park. The hardest part is breaking the caliper mounting bolts free. If you use the felt grease seal, be sure to pack it well with grease and compress it down by turning the axle nut until the wheel doesn't move. Then do the Bentley endfloat adjustment.

I changed mine in Iowa on the way to VTR in Colorado in 2001. I tightened them in to what I thought was the seating shoulder position. But at the pre-inspection before doing the autocross in Breckonridge, the judge told me that my front wheel bearings were loose. I had put on about 1000 miles. Sure enough, I had to really set them into the shoulder. He was right.
