Front wheel bearings??

Wondering what the current best direction is? I have NOS outer bearings and one NOS inner bearing. My front bearings are OK but I'm going to pull the wheels to change rotors. Its been my experience that usually the inner bearing pull's apart. I will see if one ends up OK but if it doesn't is Moss'es tapered bearing option any good? Does it use the spacer and shims to keep the axle stress low? Other best options at this time? Source for a good quality inner ball bearing? I've fitted the County brand and wasn't happy with them.

Thanks!

Kurt.

I guess what I should be asking is does anyone sell a quality inner bearing anymore. My experience with the County's was that they were almost as loose as the one's I was replacing when they were brand new. Also, I have had the ball bearings eventually loosen up and require replacement, If the tapered rollers work OK, I imagine one would never have to replace again.

I have been told these Timkens are the "go to":

part # part
07097 inner
05066 outer
07204 race inner
05185 race outer

I did the Timken taper bearing upgrade. I had to shim the rear bearing to keep it from bottoming out on the axle radius though. I also had to have .060" cut off the back side of my axle nuts to properly torque the bearings with the spacer and shim stack, but it worked great and my wheel bearings are true and tight!

hope this helps

Kurt, Check and see if you have a bearing supply house in your area. They should be able to use the original part numbers to cross reference different brands they have available. You should be able to get a good selection from them.

These guys are local to me, and I use them all the time for bearings and seals, I'm sure they'll ship to you too.

Wherever you source your bearings from, try to get ones not made in China. US ones are good, as are German, Swiss and Japanese. But the name of the bearing won't help you out as most of the major manufacturers, including Timken, have factories in China. Some places have been known to put Chinese made bearings in "Made in USA" boxes. A wheel bearing isn't where I'd be looking to cut corners.

Another good reason to talk to a specialist who will likely be able to answer that question.

Thanks much folks....hopefully when I tear it down I can salvage one of the original inners. Life happens and I haven't gotten to it yet. Good info on the tapered bearings not being a bolt on. Unfortunately, I used to have three different bearing house's in Sioux City and don't believe any of them are still in business. We've gone to a throw away world. I'll ask around but may give Gerard's guy a call if I need a bearing.
