Fitting the spare wheel on the outside of a BJ8

I know that you can get exterior lugage racks from people like SC Parts but has anybody had any experience of fitting the spare wheel on a rack outside the boot to give more secure luggage space while touring. Is rear view a problem?

I cant answer your specific question but if you are thinking of a rack anyway I would recommend looking at the Cape International bootrack. This is simpler to fit than the traditional one and it lies at an angle, down the slope of, and kind of parallel to the boot lid as opposed to be being raised up and horizontal as on the other one. It looks better I think IMHO. It certainly wouldnt obscure any views.

Hi BrianC, I think the limiting factor you will run into fitting the spare wheel/tyre on to the boot lid will be the lid's lack of strength. This will limit the load the boot lid can support under dynamic conditions. However, I have never seen it done.---Fwiw---Keoke

I think a Continental Kit on a Healey would look great!

I have a rack with a suitcase mounted on the rear boot that I keep top cover, car cover, spares as dist cap, oil, points and much more. The problem is rear view. I'd assume the spare tire would do the same. There is a guy out here who chopped the rear end off an old junker and made it into a trailer. Just think of the extra fuel you could drag around if you leave the tank in it. If you've gone on any of the Golden Gate Healey things (as Dixon and Tahoe) you may have seen it. Aside form the soft metal on the boot (trunk) you'd should consider the rather poor at best rear view mirror. I say leave the spare out and carry a cel phone, auto club card, and a can of flat fix. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif Hey TH! Did you ever consider mounting a Ski Boat Mirror to the top of the windscreen?, works great gives a panoramic view that the luggage can not block. I use one on my car all the time when traveling loaded. They come with clamps no need to bore holes in the windscreen frame--Fwiw---Keoke

Hello, just to fill in. I saw a Swedish AH with the spare wheel on the booth at St. Moritz last year. There is a picture of the car at the Austin Healey Club Sweden.

It looks pretty good. It looks like it is supported over the boot/trunk to the rear bumper and I cannot imagine where at the top.
Keoke, that sounds good. But I am awaiting a matching Talbot bullet mirror for the passinger side I ordered from Germany two weeks ago. I would guess the boat mirror would be MUCH chaeper.

You know what KCH ? I could not imagine what a Healey would look like with a boot mounted spare it seems the owner has fabricated some type support that relieves the boot lid of the actual load. However, it is /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif---That Michael fellow must be physic! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Germany was 30% less. And this is new old stock to match with the old one I have. I've been using a fish eye suction one so I'm looking forward to a real rear view.
Brian, how much more are you looking to carry and how often? I can carry enough for a weekend for two using the area behind the seat and the boot. The suitcase is just to carry stuff I really don't need and I get alot of comments cause it's from the 50's (with 50's and 60's travel stickers pasted on).
