Disc Brake conversion to BN2

Hi,

has anyone experience with the disc brake conversion kit on a 100 BN2?
-When using the original 100 brake master cylinder how does the pedal feel?
-Do I have to fit a brake servo?
-How is the front to rear balance with the stock rear drums? Do I have to fit a proportioning valve??

I am thinking of getting me the conversion set from Denis Welch / England -any experiences with this kit?

Thomas:

I have the DW rear disc conversion kit on my BJ8. I used Jaguar XJS calipers and discs on the rear. I only purchased the mounting brakets from DW. I sourced the brake calipers locally. The Jag XJS rear caliper pistons are 38mm while my BJ8 front caliper pistons are 52mm, providing more brakes in the front.

You should still install an adjustable proportioning valve. On lose surfaces, more rear brake is appropriate because the braking inertia that is transferred to the front brakes is less than on dry smooth surfaces. On the other hand, too much rear brake for a given condition will put the rear end in front with hard braking in a corner. You will need to experiment in a safe place to get the proportioning correct.

A servo should not be necessary. The amount of fluid transferred with pedal pressure when using disc brakes is less than with your BN2 drum brakes (another reason for a proportining valve).
Best regards,
Jim

Mine was already converted when I got it. There is no proportioning valve, but the back tends to lock on [very] hard braking so it's a good idea to fit one.

If you are selling the drum brake bits I might be interested in converting back - not because I don't like the discs, but because I am being excluded from some rallys because of the non-standard brake set-up.

..I put on the Welch kit on my BN1, worked just fine, just make sure he sends the right bolts, he sent non british bolts for some reason, did we ever have a go around !!!
I have a non stock master cylinder, but nothing very new and all seems great, heck of a lot better than the drums.
Since I have a Chevy on mine, maybe I should have gone more exotic, but then again I wanted to keep it simple and easy.

Thanks folks for your answers...

What I have learned from them, is that the Welch kit for the front brakes should work nicely with the standard rear drums and that it is advisable to fit a proportioning valve.

What I am not so shure about is still the question if all works fine with the standard mastercylinder. I am so unsure, because years ago I converted my Sprite MK2 to front diskbrakes and hat to change the mastercylinder because with the standard drumbrake m.-cylinder the pedalforces necesaary were unbelievable to stop the car.

Please advise again.
