Disc brake conversion

I thought that all had gone well with the disc brake conversion on the bugeye, but have a couple of questions which make me suspect that something is awry.

First there is only about 3/8" clearance between the disc and the tie rod end. Is this as it should be ?

Also I can't see how the dust covers are attached. The manual seems to show them going between the spindle and the disc, but there does not seem to be any room. I searched the web and a lot of conversions do not seem to use the covers. Is this ok ?

If I have done it correctly, pictures are attached.

 3/8"! That's a lot. I have a ground bolt to the tie-rod and a clearance of a lot less than that.

[EDIT: maybe I'm thinking of the tie-rod to the wheel hub. Sorry.]

There are different arms. Don't remember just how mine ended up but I'm sure I have the dust covers fitted.

The arms are BTA648 and 649. The dust plates have two tabs that the caliper bolts pass through, and one small single bolt that holds it to a tab on the swivel axle.

Plenty of clearance, now put one of the wheels on and double check you still have clearance.

Thanks for the replies. I will put a wheel on and check clearance.
I must have the wrong dust covers. These do not have a pair of holes to fit the caliper bolts, just 2 L shaped tags about an inch deep and one center hole. All three are equally spaced around the circumference. Is there a problem if I don't use dust shields ? Pictures on the web do not seem to show them, unless they look very different from the ones I have.

Didn't some dust covers attach via special caliper bolts that had miniature studs on them ... or am I thinking of a different car?

Sounds like you have the correct ones. The bolts you see in the first shot will hold the caliper. The ears on the caliper go between the tabs and the threaded holes. The third shot is of a spare dust shield. IMG_0949.jpgIMG_0950.jpgIMG_0952.jpg

Because sometimes they are a PITA to put on. For safety reasons the dust shields are just that. Wants to keep road dust and water in the rain off of your brake discs.
