disc brake anti squel pads

On my BJ8, phase 1, I've just replaced the pads with Green Stuff. I have not tested the brakes due to snow but they included anti sequel pads. They are rectangular. The pistons are hollow and the shims are open 1/2 open. I may not need the provided shims but if I do, how would they work with nothing to butt up against on the piston side?

Put the shims in as specified or the brakes may squeal.

As Detroit engineers used to say: "Parts left off cost nothing and cause no problems." Therefore one can assume if there's a shim included, thus decreasing their profit margin, the engineers believe it's necessary.

The metal shims are in. It's the stick on pads I don't understand. Why aren't they round if the piston is round? Basically only padding part of the piston rim or actually only touching part of the round, half open shim. The instructions implies the pads are an option.

Yes TH they are an option one interpretation of this is that there are many other types of brake squeal deterrents. However, few work as well.
OTOH: use them only if you experience brake squeal
IMO: I would not want to go back through the same procedure to add the anti squeal after initial brake pad assembly.
The shape of the pads has no bearing on their functionality but simplifies the installation.

OH ! Hows the snow-:driving:

Hi Michael,

Well, I used those pads on my Triumph TR7 with the anti-squeal pads and no squeal. However, since I have always understood that the caliper shims were also anti-squeal, I would not use the supplied pads. It could be that the pads also fit a car that doesn’t have the shims and requires the anti-squeal pads. Since pulling the pads is not a big job, you can always add them if you find them necessary.

By the way, I have used sintered metallic pads (as original) since new and only had to replace them once when tearing down the car in the mid ‘80s. What were you using and was replacement required? Why do you prefer the Green Stuff pads?

Waiting for another snow storm and power outage ... Trees are great but only when power lines are underground. Not so here.
