Cylinder jacket damage from water pump..

OK folks, so for various reasons, I started to determine what was needed to get the rebuilt (not by me) 1275 ready to put in my car.
I was fiddling with the water pump and ended up pulling it off.(long unrelated story)
What I found is attached.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif
The best I can measure, it appears that the gouge into the cylinder jacket is .043" at the deepest part.

Question is, how bad is this? Is this of little consequence or do I need to find a new block?

I don't think that will be a problem. True it weakens the cylinder and can be cause for starting a crack, but it is doubtful something will happen with it since pneumatic and thermal pressures are relatively low. I have seen this before on other cars. If it were me, I would wait until there is a problem with the engine before switching the block.

Amen to that. Musta been makin' a LOT of noise and leakin' out the bearing like mad! With a new pump it shouldn't give problems. Just keep the coolant mixture right to minimize corrosion.

I find this interesting, I ordered a new pump from VB for my 1098, and it ground against the back wall, not to the extent this picture shows. Anyway I called VB and they sent out a new pump and it still contacted the wall. I actually slightly ground the wall so that it moved freely. I wonder if the markings are from a replacement pump as my original pump is no where as deep as the new replacements.

Donn and Dr E..thanks, not knowing the thickness of that wall..I was getting worried. Perhaps this is the reason the guy pulled the engine for rebuild (?) not realizing it was just a pump.
I'm guessing the pump failed (bearings?) and the impeller walked back into the cylinder wall? Can't imagine how else it would happen..

HAN8 - I have/had a similar problem on my 1098..The new pump barely touched..I ground the edge of the pump impeller just a bit and it spins freely. I ended up taking just a bit more off in case some 'play' develops after a while..to avoid what is seen above
The 1098 is in the car now, so I couldn't compare but the pump that came out of the 1275 seems about the same.
I think these deeper fins were for the 1275..and now they're sold for all A series..at least it seems that way and I see no one making a differentiation in the depth in their catalogs. (maybe I missed it?)
