As I was returning from the hardware store a few minutes ago my accelerator pedal went loose and the engine dropped to idle. I pulled over and, as expected, the connecting rod to the throttle linkage had come loose. A quick fix and I made sure it was good and snug back together, and man, what a difference it makes! I guess I had let the linkage get loose and sloppy over time and had just accepted the hesitation as a sign I was due for a tune up(which I am). Beware of sloppy linkages!
I should add as a side-note that I got my hair cut today /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/troll.gif and my barber said she owned a 58 TR3 back in the day and always regrets having sold it! Of course!

My throttle linkage came apart yesterday just as I was blasting past a 1/2 ton at full banshee throttle! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
It was a bit funny actualy because I spent quite a few seconds right alongside him in the wrong lane of a 2 lane country road, we were just looking at each other /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif until I coasted to a stop behind him. To his credit he backed up 1/4 mile to help me fix it.
The split pin that keeps the upper linkage ball joint had gotten lost allowing the screw to back out till it fell apart. In the great British tradition, that whole linkage setup seems unnecessarily complicated to me!

Beware the "simplified" looking throttle linkage available out there. I had installed same on my TR6 and was impressed at how simple and sturdy it looked. Made sense, just a clip and a ball on the shaft. Till it fell apart. I ordered from TRF the original type linkage (cheaper than the other to boot) and have no problems. Exact replica of OE. The linkage takes a lot of abuse and needs to be sturdy and well built.

Applies to TR3 & 4... not sure about TR6:

As you probably know it is important to lube the linkages. Just a drop now & again will do. Some drivers just use the end of the dipstick to put a drop on each connection every time they check the oil.

If the knob is sloppy or comes loose because it has worn oval you can remove it & put a thin washer under it so it presents a surface 90 degrees rotated from before and it should hold better.

I really think I could do better with some coat hangers and some bailing wire.

Well that dirty oil bit is ok, but if you really want to lube the throttle linkage Geo, why don't you get a bit of Copa Slip from Moss ?. Of course if you forget to put the split pin back in even Copa Slip won't help you.Been-Keepin cool? Bit warm over here too---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
