Hi guys!

IM getting rather tired of taking my car to my mechanic and getting ripped of for what ive been told is a BLODDY SIMPLE TUNE!
I'm running twin SU's (im pretty sure 1&3/4)

Don't my air filters look pERTy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Is there any good internet tutorials on setting up a nice tune/performance tuning/advancing etc...

Cheers

Re: emgebe

The post on the manuals has a good SU manual that I have already printed out, it looks helpful, especially in the way it breaks down the whys and what fors.

Re: emgebe

Setting up the ignition system is straight-forward and explained well in most manuals. Though I can tune SUs, I never have felt I was doing it right. I have the Haynes SU manual and the appropriate sections from the factory manuals for my cars. Still... I'd like a seasoned pro to walk me through (hands on) proper mixture setting on SU and Stromberg carbs. That said, you can get the mixture close enough by following the basic steps in the manuals.

If your in the MGCC, see if they have the SU rebuild and tune-up video, easy to follow, i found it a great help!

Re: emgebe

EMGEBE, setting the carbs to the correct mixture can be tricky, but get them as close as you can, then drive the car a few miles, get out and pull the front plug and rear plug aand if it's not gray/brown, you will need to turn a flat or two on the jet. If they are black, too rich, screw the adjuster up and very white, too lean, adjust down. If the front one seems ok then only adjust the back one or vise versea. Now you drive it a few more miles and look again, after a few tries you will get the feel of rich and lean. Now you have the mixture right, get the idle right and have the control linkage adjusted so when you pull on the accelerator cable the little flap on each carb moves at the same time, (takes a few tries). Re: emgebe

I think it is between 1.5 to 2 hours long, very handy though!
Here in Sydney it was $4 for the month between meetings. Just check the club library.

Re: emgebe

Frequent tunings are often caused by a mechanic trying to make up for a weak or faulty ignition system by adjusting the carbs. It can also be caused by worn parts like throttle shafts or distributors that will quickly cause the state of "tune" to deteriorate.
See if you can find a seasoned LBC mechanic who can give you an in depth analasis of the mechanical parts and not just the "simple tune" adjustments for a reasonable price. If you find something hidden it may greatly extend the intervals between tune ups.
Doing a simple tune yourself isen't difficult, but learning it is a lot easier in person than by a book.
Send me a plane ticket. I'll gladly come to Melbourn and set ya right up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Re: emgebe

They should be 1 1/2" SU's.
And if the floats are adjusted correctly, you only have two adjustments to make, the mixture and the idle.
I find the old rubber hose the easiest to get them balanced.
Like they say, it's not rocket science.
All the best, Ross.
