How do you remove the bearings to completely disassemble the hub from the backing plate?

The hub pulls off. It's set onto a spline, which could be corroded and stuck. I have a factory hub puller in case it comes to that, but a universal puller should work. Make sure you have the nut AND tapered washer out before attempting removal.

looks to me like a mga 1500 front hub. If you do not have a puller then bolt the wheel on and give it a kick from the backside. Bob

The bearings are just a interference fit on MGA.s. They can be a real PITA to get off the front stub axle. Sometimes 2 crow bars will also work if the puller is not available. Bob

AutoZone will rent you a 8" puller for free if you have access to one of their stores.

You can also rent a slide hammer.

Doh! I thought it was a rear hub. Guess I didn't notice the second hole in the back plate. I still have a puller if you need it. You can probably get a 3-jaw to work, just be careful of it slipping and dinging the first thread on the spindle.

Yep...
Put a little, greased nut under the pointy end or a couple of pennies.
