Plugs for Air Injector rail

Plugs for Air Injector rail

I purchased some Allen head plugs for my MGB. I was reading over smog removal instructions I have obtained from someone on a PDF document and found this statement:
"Remove the Air Injectors and replace them with 7/16"-20 fine threaded bolts 3/4" in length. Do not be tempted to use Allen head plugs because they will have to be bottomed out into the head, projecting into and thus creating an obstruction to air flow in the exhaust ports. "

should I toss the allen head plugs and use bolts? I see so many MGB with the allen head plugs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I dunno about that. I reckon if you use hi-temp loctite on them and don't screw them in as far as the PDF says you 'have to' you'll be ok and won't disrupt the exhaust port flow.

Lots of people use allen head screws to plug their air pump injection holes. So, i can't imagine it being all _that_ bad if done right.

I call BS on that. Have a look at the plug, most are concave at the bottom. There's no part that fits below the plane of the orifice. I seriosly doubt you could detect any gasflow differences between bolts and allen head plugs.

Yay Scott! BS fer sure: There are smaller diameter "tubes" projecting into the exhaust ports from the holes anyway! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I have never seen or heard of a single incident of a problem on any motor with those plugs. Sounds like a urban legend

The Allen screws are the neatest and more "official looking" way to go. You can also use brass pipe plugs, the ones with the square heads on them. The brass might be a little easier to get out should you have to remove them for some reason in the distant future. Jack

The problem in using pipeplugs is the thread is not correct. You can use 7/16" bolts. cut off, screwed in the holes and then piened over so that they just dissappear from sight. Takes a bit of work to do it right but when done properly there is no trace of the holes being plugged

Re: Plugs for Air Injector rail

I just use a good neversieze. The oil in the neversieze will burn out leaving the solids behind, be they nickle, moly or copper. Loctite will not hold up when the metal gets close to 400 degrees
