The only way to do it IMHO is as a unit! Drain the tranny, disconnect the drive-shaft at the axle and remove, disconnect all the anciliaries to the engine (don't forget the ground-strap by the starter!!), remove trans. mount bolts (from underneath and inside at each side of the tunnel),disconnect the clutch slave cylinder (I like to keep it connected to the line and tie the push-lever so that bleeding is not necessary), remove the shift lever, remove the radiator, undo the motor mounts and lift it all out! A decent engine hoist and leveler and a few wrenches are the tools needed. It really isn't a daunting task! Is your car a bugeye? Removing the bonnet (hood) is also a very good idea! Others will have better pointers on later cars as far as the front body-work!
PS I like to just undo the intake (carbs & manifold as a unit) and exhaust manifolds and just set them to the side!
