Stripped exhaust manifold stud

I heard an exhaust leak in my '67 BJ8. When I tried to tighten the nut, the stud stripped. I need some advice on the best way to fix it. Should I suck it up, pull the manifold off and try to get it out? Put it on a lift, remove the down pipe, drill out the stud and put a bolt and nut on it, or try to drill it out, thread it and put in a new stud.
Thanks,
Larry

If it was me...

I'd pull the manifold(s) off and soak the studs where they enter the casting with a good quality penetrating oil (NOT WD-40) for a day or two.

Then I'd gently warm the threaded area of the casting with a torch and remove all six studs with a pair of Vise-Grips.

I suppose the first thing to do would be to have the new studs, brass nuts, and gaskets on hand.

As said, rock back and forth but minimally. Maybe as much as only 1 hour on a clock so to speak. When rocking try to increase the loosening rock a tad each time. If it binds stop. Keep adding lubricant. Make absolutely sure that you are rocking the entire stud and not just what is showing or you will snap it at the head and then problems become worse. Heat is a great help but be careful not to heat the head more than necessary. Heat the stud. Normally one would heat a nut or stud read hot but you don't want to transfer so much heat to the head.

I have heard of people heating an entire head in an oven so it heats uniformally. Than you could apply even more heat to teh stud.

I had two broken ones, and the others very difficult to remove. Some did come straight out, others didn't. You almost always have to remove the manifold. A friend of mine and quite a welder, removed mine by heating only until purple, not red. Too much heat is not good. Once heated the two broken ones came right out and the threads were just fine. Finding the coarse thread stud on one end, and fine thread on the other is a different story. You can find "fine thread on each end, and coarse thread on each end quite easy."
Good Luck

I forgot about the threads be sure to go to an auto supply hose and specify exhaust stds they are threaded fine on one end and coarse on the other and when you reinstall the manifold get some brass exhaust nuts to put it back with.
