Any chance you've got a 3.45 set?

Randall, Marvin: PMs sent.

Other guys: really fascinating observations. I like the idea of trying it as is and seeing what happens--appeals to the scientist in me. But, the goal for this restoration is to have a mechanically solid car, and that means not keeping anything that is questionable. So, at this point, I think the rusty gears will go. Just a matter of what to replace them with.

Bravo, Steve...you came to the right decision. I spend most of my time repairing other PO's science projects.

Randall,
No 3.45 that I know of. There are several diffs here that have not been inspected. There is a solid axle with a 54 inch wide lenght I have been tempted to pull and see what they are. Has 10 " drums.

I am for doing a job right also; my dad insisted that anything worth doing is doing right. I think water got in and probably made a mess of everything in outer bearing land too. You might need a whole unit, but I am no expert. However, I believe you are talking to the right guys; it is just my rear axle disassembly experience is not that great.

Well, I made a case spreader and removed the differential. The carrier bearings were about as bad as I expected, maybe even a bit worse. I haven't removed the pinion yet, but I don't expect its bearings to be any better. Clearly, this will be a full-up rebuild. Sigh.

The only good side of this is its effect on those who get lazy and don't check or replace their diff oil. This is what happens.

Wow, nice spreader. I’ve rebuilt a couple dozen diffs, but never used a spreader...now you have me wondering if I should have made one years ago?!?

Wow so they really do come apart that way. I remember telling my neighbor who was a 4 wheel drive guy that they came apart that way because I saw it in a book, and he gave me that look—you know the LOOK!-- Yeh that look.
