Just when you think it's fixed....

Yes, I LOVE my LBC. I LOVE my LBC. Repeat as necessary. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif Just when you think you've got everything squared away after recently replacing brakes and flushing the cooling system, what's the one commonly replaced part of the cooling system I haven't replaced yet?

Survey says... The water pump. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I had wondered about that before after seeing some moisture on the lower nut once or twice this year, but it has certainly decided to let go. Nice antifreeze puddle in the catch pan, so after cleaning things up, tightening hose clamps, and stuffing a paper towel under the weep (flood?) hole, it's getting mighty wet. Thank goodness Vicky Brit has replacements, even if Moss doesn't.

So, anything I should know about water pumps? I've had it out before when I put a new fan clutch in, so I know how to swap the fan clutch. I had heard of spinning the pump while dry to help seat the shaft seals on a new pump, is there any truth to that? Or is there hope of reviving the old one that way? Either way, the new one is going in. I'm not going through the pain of working on the ratzen fratzen cooling system again without putting the new pump in, but if there's hope for the old one as a spare, I'll keep it.

Here's what Moss has to say about it.

A good idea, and I doubt if there's a down-side....

I think this was also discussed on a BCF forum somewhere, sometime...

Ah, I thought I had read it somewhere, and maybe it was the Moss site I read it on. Thanks for the link!

I started to mention waterpump the other day when you were experiencing moisture on the front of the engine. I experienced similar symptoms but didn't discover it till I pulled the engine and noticed the water pump shaft had about a 1/4" play in it. I always thought that the liquid that I kept seeing was coming from somewhere near the radiator neck and never suspected the water pump. Glad you found it bud. Thinks for the interesting tidbit on breaking them in. I never would have though of that.

I was starting to wonder about the pump too, but I think it must have stopped leaking briefly. This time it let a more noticeable amount of coolant out and left the bottom stud of the pump wet. Ah well. New one's coming soon.

Dave, there used to be a parts house in the Mentor area (or Madison, mebbe) that had LBC parts on the shelf... LOTS of them. Can't remember their name, but it was a "hole in the wall" kinda place, great inventory. I needed some generator brushes once on a trip to Geneva-on-the-Lake, they had 'em on the shelf. Found them in the 'phone book.

Had similar probs. If you need some help with local places / parts availability -- email @ spritey at comcast dot net

Mine has been up in the air for 2 wks due to a stupid accel cable (just can't get it set right and idles like I stole it).
