Hydraulic Shock Fluid - Bilstein Shock Conversion

I'm installing my Christmas Present...... Putzke's Fahrpass Bilstein Shock conversion kit. Pretty easy task but there is one thing I didn't plan ahead on, I did not plan for refilling the oil in the original equipment shock.

The installation calls to remove the oil plug and take the valving out and then refill with oil. Moss sells hydraulic shock absorber fluid, but I can't (or won't) wait to have it delivered. So here is my question, can I purchase an oil at a local auto part store? If so, what would be appropriate specifications?

I would think so.However, I would ask Putzke to be sure that the brand is compatible --Keoke

? If so, what would be appropriate specifications?

You need shock oil and your local auto parts store will not even know what you are talking about. Go to a motorcycle store and buy some "fork" oil. A popular brand is Bel-Ray and I would recommend 20 wt oil for your '61 3000.

Since the oil wont be doing any hydraulic work, it can be any old oil you have laying around. All they are doing is lubricating the non-existent bushings, and having some slosh around in the cylinder bores. 90weight gear oil would be the best, probably, but anything will do.

Peter,
You are correct. I spaced out on the first paragraph of the initial post about removing the valving because of the conversion to tube shocks, and instead, focused on the second paragraph about where to find correct shock oil.

You will like the conversion. My BJ8 rides better than my wife's Toyota. It is a nice upgrade!
