Exhaust Note

I put the TT stainless steel complete exhaust system purchased from Moss on my BJ8. It turned out to be very quiet. It was such a change from the glass-packs I had that I found the driving experience to be so different. I was using much higher RPM's in the gears, and could actually hear the radio! In time, I missed the Healey sound so I took the two rear mufflers and sleeved them with solid pipes. It now sounds good (like a Healey should). Perhaps in time the front mufflers will "break in" and I can return the rear mufflers back to normal use.

It's not so much that the exhaust tone of the 100 is offensive but rather that the sound of a Healey six is simply so sweet and iconic.

I currently have a 2" Magnaflow coupled to the DW tubular 4-2-1 collector and though I recently adapted the system to quickly switch over to a side-exhaust I found the noise level pretty obtrusive and have gone back to the long rear-exit tailpipe. I rigged up a means of quickly and temporarily converting to side exhaust when I was planning to take the AutoTrain down to Conclave and they require 4" ground clearance. The lowest point on my car with the conventional setup is about 3-1/2" where the tailpipe bends to clear rear axle and suspension pieces, whereas with side exhaust I have 4-1/2" clearance.

As we all know, Conclave was cancelled and I would like to preserve what little hearing I have left so I have reinstalled the long tailpipe.

Another option: Healey Surgeons sells a well-made mild steel muffler which they claim is the quietest one available. I'm currently running one of these which I bought after my original TT immediately blew out. It is indeed, for a Healey, quiet-ish. Importantly it has none of the cruising-speed resonance which plagued my earlier mufflers. IIRC, including shipping it was in the low $200s.

I believe it comes from AHspares, but am not sure. It may also be available in SS.

Yes My restorer also suggested this as well. Moss claims that I will get 2 replacements when everything is back up to speed.

I put a SS Bell system on my BJ8 and the sound is perfect for me...not to soft nor too loud. The system was complete with three hardware parts kits for each section, front head pipes, center mufflers and rear resonators.

That's where I go next if Moss can't come up with the replacements.

The nicest sounding Healey I had was a 66 BJ8 the had a 'muffler shop' system. Straight pipes back to two small glass pack? resonators. That was a tunnel loving car:welcoming:.
