Accelerator Cable termination on carb linkage

I've had to replace multiple accelerator cables, usually 2 per year, due to cable fraying at the carb linkage where it attaches and teminates at the linkage. I can't seem to find the proper clamp on fitting that can swivel and keep the cable pulling straight. Cable was binding on Bugsy again this am and I discovered that the original cable terminating OEM piece was cracked and now needs to be replaced. On top of that it disappeared somewhere in the garage when I removed it.

What are people using that is an improvement over OEM piece. I do not see these available in the VB Catalog. How about something motorcycle related in terms of proper termination that would work. Small fitting that can swivel and move as needed.

Anyone got a couple of spares off of old carb pinkages they want to sell?

I've got something I can rig up temporarily but I've robbed both the chokes and accel cable terminating fittings off of my spare engine.

Here's mine. The thing closest to the lever that looks like a hex nut is not one; it's fixed to the shaft. The one on the right is a nut. The piece is held in place by a split pin; nothing tight. I think this may be original.

The upper fitting which holds the cable sheath has to pivot smoothly too, or the cable can fray.

Thanks Steve,

I'll post a picture of the cable clamp I'm looking for.

Jim -

I know this sounds crazy - try a bicycle shop. They use these cables for bike brakes. If not there, a HOG shop would also have something.

George,

That was what I was planning on. Cable crapped out and was binding but what you can't see is a crack on the cable terminating clamp that was binding up. I replaced with a bike cable from Wally-World temporarily yesterday, 4 cables for $4.56 wow, but I can already tell after < 20 miles of driving that the cable from Wally-World is binding and action is eratic under foot, acceleration is not smooth and linear but jerky. Gonna make a run to the Post Office to mail taxes and a bike shop is on the way.

That looks like the bit for the heater control flap.

I have never been happy with that stock set-up either and have been considering fabricating my own cable/linkage. I liked the way the throttle cable attached on my old VW Scirocco (a ball attached to the carb linkage & a locking cup on the end of the cable. Adjustment of cable length will be made at the other end of the cable where it attaches to the pedal shaft (still working on something adjustable that I like for this end of the cable!).

Thanks all,

Swung by the Local LBC Shop here in Dayton today, yes I'm fortunate to have such a rarity only 10 minutes away from the house - MG Automotive in Kettering, OH, and managed to come up with one out of the misc nuts and bolts bin. Well worn, but it will work until I can find something better. Picture is exactly like what Steve Posted. Evidently the piece I was using is actually a Choke Pull Off Cable Terminating Nut.

Jim, you will never have trouble with that peice you got from the parts bin. Good for another 40 years.

Jack,

Now that I know what it looks like, I seem to recall one of those in the box of misc Spridget junk my local LBC Guy gave away. He does frequent total restorations and all of the old screws, nuts, and bolts go into a box that either gets pitched out when full or if you're luckly like me get to be there when he decided to empty the box. I seem t orecall one of those fittings in the greasy, grimy, old bolts box. Need to put on some gloves and see if I own a better one already. If nothing else this partially worn cable stop is far better than what I'd been using.

On another note, I changed air filters off of my spare engine. These consisted of the stock base, filters, and top off of an electrical outlet box drilled in the correct location for the air filter studs. These replaced the stock filter canisters. I must say Bugsy loves the additional air he is now able to injest as a result of the filter change out. A nice sound from the engine when I put the skiiny pedal down and seems to really pull strong now. After a squirt of carb cleaner for the spring and topping off the carbs with oil I can now say Bugsy drives quite Spritely. Warmer and drier weather promised for the weekend, Supposed to be sunny and 70 on Saturday. Vroom, Vroom!!!!
