TR2/3/3A Tr3 hub cap removal tool

Hi Folks,

I pulled all 4 of my Disc Wheels on my TR3. I used a "Flat Hd. Screw Driver" (Yeah, I know, Not good) to pry the Hub Caps off.

There was someone on the BCF that had posted a "Drawing" of a "Hub Cap Removal Tool" that duplicated the Orig. style some time ago!

I sure would like to "Buy" that Tool & or see that Drawing & "Make" one.

Who can help me out here?

Thanx Much,

Russ

PS: My new avatar as she sits today.
PPS: Basil; That new up-load system is "Great"!!

You can get more leverage from a small pry bar available at your hardware store but Ive always used the large wood handle screwdriver that came in the tool kit. I don't think my car ever came with a removal tool. Tom

Hi Viv,

Your 100% correct. TRF did carry them but they don't show them anymore. I'm going to call them with the P/N you show & see what they say.

thanx, Russ

Russ,

I stored this drawing posted by some friend on one of the TR forums.
Unfortunately, I do not remember the author for giving the due credit.
Hope it helps.

This is a hub cap removal tool. The hook goes under the cap and the mushroom presses against the wheel for leverage. The opposite end is a pry bar which can be used for removing headlight rims.

Mine came new in 1958 with a "white zinc" finish. It is still in my spares tool kit for shows. It is more like the one shown on e-bay above. It does not have the extension in the photo above. Around the garage and on the road (if I need to), I use a hooked lever type screwdriver tack remover - used for pulling up carpets which are tacked down. They work perfectly.

You are correct, the one on e-bay is original, this style is the "new-and-improved' version sold by TRF. I did have what you describe, but when I disassembled the car for restoration, it went missing .... it will turn up sooner or later.

So I'm not the only one. I find that those missing bits only show up after you've bought a replacement. Tom

FWIW -- I usually use a claw hammer (gentler and more effective than it may sound) with a bit of padding (such as the glove I will be using when the tire comes off) to protect the rim from the backside of the hammer.

On the road I carry a small Harbor Freight pry bar that has the corners rounded off a bit.

Funny thing about that. I ordered a "new" headlight dimmer bracket for my 59 TR3A from Mark Macy many months before I was ready to install it. When the time came, I searched for 3 days to no avail and got another one.........the original one showed up two weeks after I was done. An E-Bay buyer got a good deal.

Not as fancy looking as the tool above, but very effective:
Take a piece of 1/16" or 3/32" X 1" brass, about 8" long. Hammer over the last inch into a 90* bend.
To use, slip the short end under the hub cap and push the long end to the side. Pops 'em right off without hurting the paint on your wheels.

I made up that drawing a few years ago thinking it was the original style. I copied it from a TRF "improved"model. I also suggested putting a dab of Slicone Seal on the mushroom tip that touches the painted wheel surface. I made one for a friend and 3-4 more that I sold on eBay. (I've got wires on mine) When I discovered it wasn't the original style, I archived it & forgot about it. It works great & looks cool but don't show it to the judges!!
