Is a press required or Is this a fairly straightforward do it yourself thing carefully with a ball peen hammer? What about getting old studs out?

Karl-

Are you talking front or rear studs? Front are straightforward as you describe, tap the old ones out, then you can typically pull the new ones back in with a nut a some washers.

The rear studs are a completely different matter. They are threaded and then peened over on the backside of the hub. A real pain. Typical attack is to grind off the peened area, then carefuly back out the threaded studs.
