Rear leaf springs

64BJ8. My rear leaf springs are the correct ones (6) they are new from moss. Installed by PO 3 years ago. My car sits 1 1/2" too high. A spring shop told me it would cost about 300-400 to remove, correct them, and reinstall.

I could buy new ones and install them myself cheaper.

There's the risk. Another new set may be right, or make the car too high or too low.

Any suggestions as to where I can purchase a correct set? Or should I have the spring shop work on them.

One way to think about this is the "risk" is only your time for replacing the springs. If they are not right then you can return them hassle-free with Moss (can't say that about all vendors).

Are you "sure" it's too high? The phase 2 was designed to sit an inch or so higher than the earlier cars. This would make the distance from ground to the fender edge, measured on the wheel center line, around 28 plus inches.

With brand new springs it's hard to know where they will end up after they have sagged a bit. They will likely drop an inch or more with use. After this period of use it might be hard to return them to the vendor.

I think Keoke suggests taking a leaf or two out to get near the correct ride height, & then adding back if needed, as they settle.

In my experience with a BN2, the now three year old Moss springs were slightly high at first & soon settled to perfect ride height. (27" ground to fender lip).

It is possible to remove spring leaves without disconnecting the main leaf anchor & shackles. You do have to remove & replace the U bolts & the spring center bolt.

Yep Dave, you have to do the whole nine yards.The main leaf can be left connected.I do not belive you are going to find a set of rear springs for a BJ8 that I know of that will fit off the shelf and establish the correct ride heigth. Roger, If you want to find out how to fit a set look back in the archives when I was guiding[Bless his trust] Greg on setting up a set correctly.An off the shelf new set of BJ8 springs [Based on my experience] will only settle 1/2" after bedding in.---Keoke

Hi Dave, yes, they are an inch and an half higher than they should be, for the bJ8. I have the correct 6 leaf spring. How long or how many miles does it take for them to settle? They have been on the car 3 years, but maybe only 1,000 miles on them. Think they will settle with driving, or should 3 years of the weight of the car have settled them my now.

It would be nice to hear that driving the car will settle them and save me money and time working on it, instead of driving it. I am trying so hard to get her right, before I take her out and show her off. Tring to avoid the, Oh I'll be fixing that later and this and that need to be addressed. If I know about it, I'd prefer to make it right, now. I certainly have learned patience, with the situation at the body shops. Now I have her and she will be finished correctly when she's off the jack stands in my gargae and ready to be driven-enjoyed. I'll just keep plugging away and enjoying it, thanks to the help from the folks here. Roger

Roger, they do settle with time but not sitting at a paint/body shop for 19 months. Are you running proper size tires? Are you phase one or two? '64 was a little unclear on that point. The hight was raised on the phase II. Are both sides equal hight? Have you finnished adding all the stuff into the boot (ie, spare tire, battery,jack,and spares)?
I've been behaving with my Cayenne and haven't needed your services again. Your work sure is nice so I have no doubts you will have the most beautiful BJ8.

Hi TH. Thanks for taking part in my question, and thanks for the complement. My car. BJ8 phase II. Yes, correct tires and rims. Records from PO, showed he purchased the correct leaf spring pair from Moss. It would seem from the input here, that one would be luck to get a set of leaf springs from any vendor, that did not need to be tweeked.

So, I'll visit the leaf spring specialist and have him do his magic. Thanks all. Roger
