TR2/3/3A TR3- installing rear leaf springs = nightmare....

Thanks for looking.

Just wondering if something is wrong. I just installed the rear leaf springs on my tr3. I remember when I undid the the axle Ubolts before I striped the frame that the axle sat on the top of the frame. As soon as I unbolted the axle the leaf spring sprung to about flush with the bottom of the frame. Is it normal for the axle to sit right on the frame? Seems like something is not right.

I just installed them again and I had to step on the spring eye while my brother installed the shackle. everything is installed as it should be but the axle is still sitting right on the frame. I have jump on the rear of the car to get the spring to even flex. Is this normal with new springs?

thanks

Yep, here is a shot of mine and I used new springs. As you can see it sits right on the frame thats why hopefully you added new rubber bumpers. E-mail me if you need anyother pictures.

Cheers, Tinkerman

Thanks for the reply. Did you also have to force the spring eye down to install the shackle?

On a parts car I had but all original the axle was maybe 1inch above the frame.... maybe its just the new springs that are making it sit right on the frame. It really does seem like something is not right to have the axle sitting on the frame.

Thanks again

Is this a frame without the body sitting on it?

I remember some grunting, muttering and other typical LBC type expletives used in the installaation of the springs. I don't remember any thing explicit, then again its been 8 or 10 years. I do suspect that I used some clamping devices to get everthing alligned.

Good :uck, Tinkerman

Without the weight of the body, it's normal for the axle to touch the frame. With the body on (and of course the car's weight on the wheels), there should be some space, but not a great deal. If memory serves, it's only about 2" with the car fully loaded (full tank of gas, spare tire in place, two people in car, etc.)

But there have apparently been some springs on the market that weren't arched correctly, so it might be that you do have a problem.

Even with old original springs, the released spring doesn't touch the axle. I had to jack the spring up a bit to get the nuts started.
