Oil cooler

Hi,

I just had my car shipped back to me from my nephew in Phoenix, who was supposed to be restoring it. It's in somewhat better shape now but not much. Bummer, but I'm hoping to get it looking good by next summer.

Can anyone tell me if the oil cooler is supposed to be on top of the valance or underneath it for a 1974 1/2? He replaced it under the valance and it doesn't look right to me. I haven't been able to find a picture that shows it.

Thanks!

Not positive but I don't think any of them had oil coolers from the factory so any place would be acceptable.

Stewart, thanks very much for the information. I've spent a lot of time looking at the photos of your '75 restoration because you did such a good job. Now I can't seem to get to your website, though. Do you have a picture that would show the placement of the oil cooler?

Also, did you paint the Rostyle wheels on your '73? If so, do you have any tips? Right now mine are silver and I need to paint in the black, but I don't think I can mask it evenly enough so it will look right.

Thanks!

It's not hard to do the black portion. Once the silver is dry mask off the rim, I prefer the green painters tape. I start off covering the "spokes" of the rim then mask off the rest of the perimeter of the black insert then the rest of the rim, you don't have to be precise with the masking as you will cut the area out later with an exacto knife. I then use a finger nail around the edge of the black portion to mark the outline of the insert this also helps to press the tape in so you don't get overspray under the tape.

I then I take a exacto knife with a new blade and cut along that line and remove the tape. A sharp blade makes life easy so you may want to keep a couple new ones ready to go as you may go through a few. Repress the freshly cut area down and your good to go. If you goof just remove the section of tape and try again. The first one will take an hour or so to mask and cut out but it goes much quicker as you go. Take your time and you will love the results as a freshly painted roystle wheel looks great.
