oil cooler overall cooling component

An oil cooler must contribute to the overall cooling - my question is how much, or more importantly is it noticable on the little gauge on the L

I am not as concerned with oil cooling in this day of synthetic oils with a high viscosity index, as I am with the overall cooling picture.

Mine has been fitted for so long, I don't remember how much difference it made.

I did remark to myself last Thursday though, how wonderful it was (knowing my water temperature gauge was accurate, having been recently calibrated) that it was showing 160*F on a relativley hot (90*+) day in August in Florida.

About a year ago, I fitted an oil circuit thermostat, primarily to get the oil up to operating temperature more quickly (I do not have a temperature gauge fitted at this time, though I did when I first installed the oil cooler).

It was 90ish today and I took a drive...with my recently installed oil cooler with remote oil cooler, and Mocal thermostat control... which opens at about 180deg.... following the opening to engage the oil cooler, the water temp drops 10deg. I do have an oil temp. gauge and my oil temps are consistently lower than they were prior to the oil cooler... of course, you'd hope that was the case! I've gone to alot of trouble to isolate the air flow going through the oil cooler radiator from the water radiator. I did this so I won't be introducing superheated air into my radiator. The air for the oil cooler enters through my rally ducts and exits down under the car... seems to be working.

Cheers,
Steve

I recently had a new radiator core installed omn my 3000. At the same time I added an oil cooler, the combination had a dramatic effect on the operating temperture. The car now consistently runs at about 163. About the same time my buddy added the same radiator, but not an oil cooler, and his temp is about 175. Based on that I think you could reasonably expect a 5 to 10 decrees reduction in operating temp.

that is so cool
Now only if I could fab it
I made that over twenty (>20) years ago, before I knew how to do anything, I'm actually emarassed by it nowadays, but don't have the time to remake one__it's not pretty, but it functions.

Point is, it's not that hard to direct the airflow into and out of the cooler matrix.

A note of caution though, and I found this out the hard way, is that it's possible to place the oil cooler in front of the radiator creating a negative airflow, resulting in no air flowing through the oil cooler nor the portion of the radiator it's blocking. Definitely not the desired result.
