Newly sealed Gas tank - Pics

I go the tank back and it looks pretty good. Small allen type drain plug, but will suffice.

I want to clean the outside and repaint. Can I sandblast the outside now that it has been sealed on the inside?

I'll post pics later after work.

Sure you can, but for crying out loud seal all the openings double tight first. Grit in gas tank is not a good idea. Tape, retape, plug, what ever.

Well, you can sandblast tanks but keep in mind that sandblasting any large flat panel usually results in warping. I prefer to chemically strip paint, then use phosphoric acid washes to get the rust you can't sand off.

I'd have thought if it went into the hottank, it should be pretty clean already, no?

I would not blast it. In my exerience, glassbeads get EVERYWHERE despite sealing plugs/tape/what have you.

I'd rub it down with medium grit or a scuffy pad, spray it with Brakleen and paint/prime it with semigloss black. Give the top of the tank an extra coat or two of paint (or better yet, POR15) then spray the top with underseal. Done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Option and I have done, wire brush with a hand drill and clean then with mineral spirits. Spray paint with rustolum rattle can. Lasted over 15 years. Is that good enough? At my age that is a long long time. Would make me 83 so should be OK.

I wouldn't sandblast it - I'd just primer & paint...especially if they cleaned it good.

My son use to restore gas tanks and radiators for antique and classic cars. Had his business for 30 years and never sand blasted a gas tank. They were soaked in a hot tank with some sort of a lye solution in it. Then were cleaned with pressurized water. I don't think he ever had one come back. If the tank was very thin, he coated the inside. With what, I have no idea. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif PJ

Zinc electroplating might be a cool idea... but probably expensive.

WEll here is a new shot of the inside & out side. I spoke with the shop and they said blasting is fine as long as I don't get any on the inside. I used a 2" jim cap for the inlet, a small platic cap for the feul line & I cut a new blank plate where the sending unit was. I will live without it for now.

I should have taken pictures of the outside when I got it back. Really rusty from whatever chemicals they dipped it in.

Tony, I'm pretty confident he's just describing what he used so he didn't get sand in it when he blasted it...at least that makes sense to me from how I read it....
